with only minutes to spare...

ever get to work and realize that you left something critical at home? that happened to me this past sunday morning.

matt and i had a nice leisurely morning together before i had to head off to work. i had picked up a very sweet paying two day trip that would get me back home early monday afternoon. i did my usual get ready for work routine and realized that i even had time to eat breakfast with matt and grab a cup a coffee for the road. i headed out the door only five minutes later than usual and got to the employee parking lot just in time to see one of the shuttle buses drive by. no matter, i had plenty of time before i had to check in at work. about ten minutes later the next shuttle picked me up and as i step onto the bus i realize instantly that i do not have my airline id badge. crap. luckily for us we live near the airport, so instead of getting off the shuttle and driving home i decided to call matt and have him bring me my badge. ring ring, voicemail. ring ring, voicemail. we have now left the parking lot and my heart is racing, panic has set in. matt's not answering, his ringer is off or he's too far from his phone. i try calling again and again and again.

now to give you some perspective i have to check in at ten thirty. it's ten o five and i'm stuck on a shuttle bus that takes at least ten minutes to get to the airport and then another ten to get back to the parking lot. i make the decision that i will call work and let them know i am running late and they give me until eleven fifteen to get onto the airplane. i continue to call matt's phone for the next twenty minutes and get no answer. oh, is he gonna get an earful about me needing him in an emergency and him not being there!!

the shuttle driver tells me to be careful and i take off for home. talk about sunday drivers...i was not one of them! i made it home in record time without pissing off any cops, ran into the house and saw one confused face. "what are YOU doing home?" "uh, why do you have YOUR phone off??" and then i was off, back to the airport. of course matt calls me on my way back because he still doesn't know what's going on. while i explained he got me my gate information and told me the great news that i would be running length of the entire airport because we were going out of the very last gate. just my luck. i arrived at the parking lot and had the very same bus driver, who also gave me a shocked face because i had made it back so quickly. needless to say i made it to my flight, thank goodness that i am able to cut ahead of lines in security!!

and to add some actual good luck to my day we were delayed (which sounds bad but wasn't) just enough to allow us to make double time pay the whole second day of our trip. nice, huh?
