lake tahoe...

matt and i just got back from a lovely ski weekend at lake tahoe. luckily enough i happened to get a weekend off this month and matt jumped at the chance to strap on some skis. it definitely was late in the season for skiing but we weren't going to pass up this opportunity. we had planned on going skiing with brooke and jay this spring but it just didn't work out due to them moving back to wisconsin. however it sounds like they had a busy weekend themselves.

we started out early friday morning flying into reno, nv. it was an empty flight (bonus!!) and we were able to get our rental car in record time and get on the road. unfortunately once we got to the lake we were unable to check into the hotel early. no matter, we had a nice time just driving around and checking out the quiet area. we found a place to rent some skis and because it wasn't very busy the guy only charged us for two days. score! matt found out that Squaw Valley had night skiing so we decided to head in that direction. we then checked in to the hotel and changed into ski attire. once we got to Squaw, i had one good look at the mountain and had a sudden fear of dying. matt convinced me that i'd be just fine so up we went. it was just like riding a bike and after a few pointers from matt i was zig-zagging down and having a great time.

saturday morning we got up early and drove to a bigger and more popular resort called Heavenly. this place is right in the heart of lake tahoe's resort/casino village. too many people for my taste, especially since i am supposed to have control of my skis. but once on top of the mountain you get an awesome view of the lake. i don't think i've seen a more beautiful view. at one point i wasn't paying attention and had to be reminded to focus!! about 1pm matt and i decided to make a quick run to the car and grab some food we had packed. we had two ways to the bottom: a) easy way- gondola or b) hard way- ski. granted we were on a skiing vacation, but the weather was warm and the snow was soft and slushy. so we chose (a). but as we neared the gondola we discovered it was broken and they were actually rescuing people that were stuck mid-way. (b) ski we did and it sucked. three lifts, two awful "cross country" like paths, and now atleast an hour later we made it to the bottom. i was so exhausted that we called it a day and window shopped the rest of the afternoon.

matt chose the farthest ski resort for our third and final day of skiing. so we were up at the crack of dawn packing up our car and heading out. it was a beautiful drive that wound through some pretty amazing national forests. we arrived at Kirkwood right as it opened and were ready to get in a full morning of skiing. the mountain had good snow and a variety of sweet runs.
my legs were tired though and more than once i swear the snow came up and threw me down. not to be outdone though, my matty fell once or twice too. regardless, this was, by far, the best day yet. that is until matt led us to a lift that dropped us off at the start of only BLACK DIAMOND runs. i had no intention of going down, not unless it was on my bottom. i can tell you that i had one hell of a workout and matt knows now that he'd be hurtin' if he tried that again! ;)

all in all it was an awesome weekend that i can't wait to repeat. the weather really cooperated with us, no broken bones, and fantastic memories.
